Where your library is kept

Stook does not read the files where you found them. Every PDF or image you add is copied into Stook's own library, which is a single package on disk. That is why deleting an original, or emptying the folder you imported from, costs you nothing.

With iCloud Drive turned on, that package lives in Stook's own iCloud container, and every Mac signed into the same Apple Account opens the same library — the same documents, the same notes, the same folders in the same places. The cloud badge at the bottom of the spine tells you what iCloud is doing: uploading, up to date, or unable to sync.

Common questions

Does Stook change my PDFs?

No. Highlights, underlines and notes are stored beside the document, never written into it. Exporting gives you the original file back, unmodified.

The cloud badge says the library is only on this device.

That is Stook telling you iCloud refused the upload — almost always because the iCloud account is out of space. Your library is safe and complete on the Mac you are using; it simply is not reaching the other ones. Free up iCloud storage, or turn iCloud Drive off for Stook, and the badge will settle.

Search does not find a word I can see on the page.

Scanned pages have no text layer, so Stook reads them with OCR the first time it meets them. On a large import that takes a few minutes in the background, and the document you have open is always read first. If the word still does not come back afterwards, write — that is a bug worth knowing about.

Can I use Stook without iCloud?

Yes. With iCloud Drive off, the library is kept locally and nothing is sent anywhere.

Does the assistant send my documents to a server?

No. It runs on your Mac, on Apple's on-device model, and it answers only from the documents you imported. Nothing about your library leaves the machine. It needs a Mac with Apple Intelligence available; where that is not available, the rest of the app works exactly as it does otherwise.

How do I get my documents back out?

Select anything in the library and export. A document comes out as the PDF you put in; a whole selection comes out as a ZIP with the folders you filed it under.

Reporting a bug

Email the address above. What helps most, in order: what you expected, what happened instead, whether it happens every time, and a screenshot. If the app quit on its own, macOS keeps the crash report in Console under Crash Reports — attaching it turns a guess into a fix.
